Part 1: Foundations & Found Materials – Collage and Surface Design
To begin, we focus on creating engaging pictorial surfaces. Using old book pages, newspaper clippings, sheet music, cardboard, packing paper, or leftover packaging, we create unique collage backgrounds by tearing, layering, and gluing. We work with either materials brought by participants or provided recycled materials, fixing our layers with glue or homemade paste (e.g., wallpaper paste).
Line also comes into play: with ink, we add contrasts and structures to bring the compositions to life. In this way, creative surfaces are developed on a stable base – forming the foundation for the next steps.
The course emphasizes sustainability. Many materials come from recycling, everyday life, or nature. Participants are encouraged to use their own found objects, old papers, fabric scraps, photos, or prints – the goal is to creatively transform existing materials and imbue them with new meaning.
